Production

Directed by Nabeel Qureshi and produced by Fizza Ali Meerza and Mehdi Ali, “Actor in Law” marks their second collaboration following “Na Maloom Afraad.” The film’s details were unveiled during a press conference in Karachi on January 9, 2016, attended by Qureshi, Meerza, Fahad Mustafa, Mehwish Hayat, Alyy Khan, and Indian veteran actor Om Puri, who made his debut in Lollywood. Fizza, the producer, confirmed Fahad Mustafa and Mehwish Hayat as the leads. The ensemble also includes Alyy Khan, Saife Hassan, Saleem Mairaj, Saboor Ali, Anoushay Abbasi, and Ahson Talish in pivotal roles. Special appearances were made by Humayun Saeed, Mahira Khan, Nayyar Ejaz, Talat Hussain, Rehan Sheikh, and Rashid Khawaja.



Om Puri, impressed by the script’s uniqueness, revealed that he suggested the title “Actor in Law” and joined the project despite not personally knowing the team. Director Qureshi emphasized the film’s distinctive narrative, akin to “Na Maloom Afraad,” stating a preference for storytelling over mere humor. Cinematography was handled by Rana Kamran, and Urdu 1 Pictures managed both local and international distribution, marking their debut in film distribution. “Actor in Law” premiered on Eid al-Adha in mid-2016.

Release

“Actor in Law” made its international debut in the UAE, UK, and Middle East on September 8, 2015. Subsequently, it premiered nationwide in Pakistan on September 13, coinciding with Eid al-Adha. This release date placed it alongside Azfar Jafri’s romantic comedy “Janaan” and Anjum Shahzad’s romantic drama “Zindagi Kitni Haseen Hay.”

Box Office

“Actor in Law” premiered to packed theaters on September 13, 2016, captivating audiences and surpassing expectations by raking in Rs. 16 million on its debut. The following day witnessed a further surge, with earnings reaching Rs. 23.5 million. By the end of its opening weekend, the film had amassed a staggering Rs. 57.4 million.

Urdu 1 Pictures declared on September 16, 2016, that the movie had garnered a total of Rs. 60 million during the three-day Eid Holiday. Just five days later, on September 18, 2016, domestic earnings crossed the Rs. 100 million mark. The success extended globally, with Urdu 1 Pictures announcing on September 25, 2016, that the film had grossed Rs. 180 million worldwide.
