“Evil Dead Rise” movie is a 2023 American supernatural horror movie penned and directed by Lee Cronin, marking a standalone addition to the renowned Evil Dead franchise as its fifth installment. The movie follows the chilling journey of two estranged sisters, portrayed by Lily Sullivan and Alyssa Sutherland, as they confront the terror of flesh-possessing demons to safeguard their family. The film’s inception was preceded by shelved plans for direct sequels to “Evil Dead” (2013) and “Army of Darkness” (1992), as well as the abandonment of a fourth season for “Ash vs Evil Dead” (2015–2018). The events leading up to this nightmarish encounter are equally unsettling. A day earlier, Beth, a guitar technician, visits her sister Ellie, who resides in a dilapidated Los Angeles apartment complex called Monde Apartments. Ellie, a single mother to teenagers Danny and Bridget, and young Kassie, receives Beth with open arms. However, their world is turn upside down when an earthquake rattles the building, unearthing a hidden chamber in the basement. Danny’s curiosity leads him to discover ancient relics, phonograph records from 1923, and a sinister book known as the Naturom Demonto.

As the power fails and darkness descends, Ellie falls victim to an unseen force, transforming into a vessel for malevolent spirits. Trapped inside the apartment with no means of escape, Beth and the children must confront the terrifying reality of demonic possession. With their lives hanging in the balance, they race against time to decipher the secrets of the Naturom Demonto and banish the evil that has taken hold of their home.

As chaos ensues and loved ones succumb to darkness, Beth and Kassie find themselves battling against unimaginable horrors, culminating in a desperate struggle for survival against a monstrous entity known as the Marauder. In a heart-stopping climax, they confront the source of their torment and unleash a final, desperate bid for freedom.

The nightmare doesn’t end there, however. As Jessica prepares to embark on her vacation, she becomes the target of an unseen force, signaling that the sinister forces unleashed within Monde Apartments may have far-reaching consequences.

Evil Dead Rise' Cast, Release Date, Trailer, and More

During the October 2019 New York Comic Con, Raimi made a significant announcement: a new Evil Dead installment was in the works. Under the Ghost House Pictures banner, Robert G. Tapert was onboard as producer, while Raimi and Campbell assumed roles as executive producers. In June 2020, Campbell disclose that Lee Cronin, known for his collaboration with Raimi on the horror streaming series 50 States of Fright, was chose by Raimi himself to write and direct the film, initially titled Evil Dead Now. As developments progressed, New Line Cinema, the distributor of the original film, acquired the project in May 2021. Scheduled for release on HBO Max, the film underwent a title change to Evil Dead Rise.

  • Casting: In May 2021, news surfaced announcing the casting of Australian actresses Alyssa Sutherland and Lily Sullivan in the lead roles of the film. Following this, in June 2021, Gabrielle Echols, Morgan Davies, and Nell Fisher were confirmed to join the cast. Additionally, in July 2021, reports indicated that Mia Challis had also been add to the ensemble.
  • Filming: Principal photography commenced in New Zealand on June 6, 2021, with Dave Garbett assuming the role of cinematographer. Garbett, known for his work on several episodes of “Ash vs Evil Dead,” collaborated closely with production designer Nick Bassett. To recreate various interior settings, such as the apartment building, parking garage, and underground bank vault, constructed sets were erected within a rented warehouse space in Mount Wellington.The opening sequence, set at the cabin and lake, was filmed on private property outside of Auckland. While the exterior of the cabin was constructed on location, its interior was meticulously recreated within the warehouse in Mount Wellington. As production progressed, director Lee Cronin shared on July 14, 2021, that filming had reached the halfway mark. Finally, principal photography concluded on October 27, 2021, marking the end of filming.

Originally slated for an exclusive streaming debut on HBO Max, the film underwent a significant change in August 2022. Positive test screenings and Warner Bros. Pictures’ revised distribution strategy, which aimed for a greater emphasis on theatrical releases over streaming-only debuts, prompted the decision to switch to a theatrical release.


The highly anticipated theatrical release in the United States took place on April 21, 2023, under the banner of Warner Bros.

Prior to its US release, “Evil Dead Rise” made its world premiere at SXSW on March 15, 2023. Additionally, the film enjoyed midnight screenings at the Fantastic Film Festival Australia, held simultaneously in Sydney and Melbourne, on April 20.

Evil Dead Rise proved to be a box office sensation, raking in $67.2 million in the United States and Canada, along with an impressive $79.8 million in other territories, culminating in a global tally of $147 million.

In North America, the film made its debut amidst a competitive slate, including releases such as The Covenant, Chevalier, and the expanded distribution of Beau Is Afraid. With high expectations set, Evil Dead Rise was anticipate to earn between $15–20 million from 3,402 theaters during its opening weekend. Surpassing projections, it amassed $10.3 million on its first day, bolstered by $2.5 million from Thursday night previews. Ultimately, the film opened to a strong $24.5 million, clinching the second spot behind the reigning champion, The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Notably, 58% of the audience were male, with 66% falling within the 18 to 35 age bracket. Maintaining its momentum, Evil Dead Rise secured $12.2 million in its second weekend, retaining its position in second place, followed by $5.9 million in its third weekend, where it settled for third place behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Super Mario.

Internationally, the film garnered $17.9 million across 58 markets during its opening weekend. Key markets contributing to its success included Mexico ($1.9 million), the United Kingdom ($1.8 million), Brazil ($1.5 million), and France and India, where it amassed an impressive $3.2 million (equivalent to INR 26.1 crores).
