Fahad Mustafa dropped hints about the film as early as February 2017. The official announcement came on December 8, marking his fourth collaboration with director-producer duo Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza. Qureshi expressed his satisfaction in working with Mustafa, noting that the upcoming project would diverge from their previous endeavors, aiming to address pertinent social issues. Mehwish Hayat, on her third collaboration with the trio, including the 2016 film “Actor in Law,” highlighted the film’s focus on societal issues, portraying a character distinct from her previous roles. Meerza praised Hayat as one of the industry’s finest talents, emphasizing the film’s exploration of the burdens associated with weddings in society.
Mustafa, discussing the simultaneous release of this film and Nadeem Baig’s “Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2,” expressed gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with two eminent filmmakers. Additionally, on July 13, it was reported that Mohsin Abbas Haider had contributed to the film by co-writing and penning lyrics for two songs, one of which he performed.
Release
The film’s teaser made its debut on June 27, followed by the trailer on July 17. Premieres were held on August 18 in Lahore, August 19 in Dubai, and August 21 in Karachi. It hit theaters worldwide on Eid al-Adha, August 22, 2018, and in the UAE on August 23.
Despite receiving mostly positive reviews, the film struggled at the box office due to a limited number of screens compared to competing films like “Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2” by ARY Films and “Parwaaz Hai Junoon” by Hum Films. Director Nabeel Qureshi criticized what he called “unfair distribution,” while cinema management cited prioritizing “public demand.” Additionally, Geo Films faced criticism for inadequate promotion compared to other distributors.
Reception
Amna Karim, writing for Bolo Jawan, awarded the film 4 out of 5 stars, commending Nabeel Qureshi for introducing a socially responsible narrative to Pakistani cinema. Shahjehan Saleem of Something Haute also gave it a 4 out of 5-star rating, acknowledging some minor flaws but asserting that they do not significantly impact the overall narrative. Saleem emphasized the film’s focus on family dynamics, praising its blend of star power and substance.
Omair Alavi bestowed a rating of 3.5 stars out of 5, applauding the film’s meticulous attention to detail, including its art direction, dialogue, and actors’ performances. Alavi highlighted the film’s thought-provoking social message.
Sonia Ashraf, writing for DAWN Images, lauded the film for its meaningful message embedded within the love story and praised most of the characters. However, Ashraf criticized the film’s length.
Rahul Aijaz of The Express Tribune was less enthusiastic, giving the film a 2 out of 5-star rating. Aijaz acknowledged the film’s strong message about the societal mockery of marriage but felt it fell short in execution for various reasons.
International Screening
The film participated in the 2019 Jaipur International Film Festival, where it earned a nomination for Best Film. Additionally, it was showcased at the 2019 Rajasthan International Film Festival, where it secured victory in the category of Best Feature Film International.
